Mosaic Art Lessson for Preschool

Teaching Mosaic

When I began teaching Preschool, I knew that I wanted lessons of substance. This carried over into my philosophy on teaching art. Cute little arts and crafts were fine for free time, but if we wanted to do art in school, I wanted it to be something substantial and purposeful. It also needed to be simple for the preschool and kindergarten age. So, for my first art lesson, I went with a simple type of art that required very little preparation: the mosaic.

First, I cut up pieces of construction paper in different colors and different shades. Keep each color separated.

Then, I made a rudimentary (it's for Kindergarten, remember) PowerPoint to introduce what the mosaic is and showing pictures of a mosaic. I have provided that for you here. Preschool Mosaic Powerpoint

Next, I had pictures (I drew one, but there are plenty of coloring pages available online that will work) available asked them to choose which ones they would like to make a mosaic out of. If there are a lot of students, having one picture will probably work better and save time.

It is important for them to start learning separation of color, and the mosaic is the perfect practical teaching tool for that. I start by asking what color they would like each of the things in the picture to be. For example, "What color will your water be?" When they choose the color, give them the cut up pieces of paper in that color. Then provide glue and supervision, and you have a mosaic lesson!
